Laser and Shockwave Therapy

East Toronto Orthopaedic is pleased to announce that we now offer these state-of-the-art specialised treatment services for the management of musculskeletal tissue pain syndromes.

Shockwave Therapy

Extra Corporal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) directs thousands of targeted shock wave pulses to the affected area. The shockwave is a physical shock not an electric one. ESWT causes a controlled micro-trauma at the lesion site.  The body responds with increased metabolic activity around the site of pain. A mild inflammation ensues and scar tissue is broken down as well as calcification. This stimulates and accelerates the healing process.

Processes initiated by shockwave therapy include:
  • structural change of tissue
  • stimulation of bone growth
  • stimulation of the regenerative process of tissue
  • structural changes in calcium deposits followed by reabsorption of the calcium by the body
Benefits:
  • works without the use of xrays or drugs
  • stimulates the body’s natural self healing process
  • usually an immediate reduction of pain and improved movement
  • nonsurgical treatment approach
  • no significant side effects
  • accelerates healing
  • affordable and not time consuming
  • coverage is available from most insurance companies
Treatment Protocol:
A course of 3 treatments is necessary at weekly intervals.  Treatment causes minimal discomfort and takes less than half an hour.

  Indications:
  1. Plantar Fasciitis
  2. Achilles Tendonopathy
  3. Tennis Elbow
  4. Jumpers Knee
  5. Stress Fractures
  6. Calcific Rotator Cuff Tendinitis
  7. Bursitis
  8. Chronic Trigger Points
  9. Non Healing Ulcers
  10. Non Union of Fractures
  11. Mortons Neuroma
  12. Scar Tissue Treatment
  13. Hallux Rigidus

Laser Therapy and Low Energy Photon Therapy

These forms of treatment use infrared and visible red light energy to stimulate tissue to encourage healing, reduce pain and restore painfree motion. They are commonly used in conjunction with rehabilitation exercise and manual therapy for optimal treatment effect.
